IN THEIR ELEMENT

Welcome to In Their Element – A conscious exploration of creativity, practice and flow with people we admire from all walks of life.

We have long admired Sophie Wolf and her creative studio, The Place. For this volume, we visit Sophie in her home in Belgium, where she shares the rituals that ground her life—guided by intention, intuition and spirituality. We hope her story inspires you to connect with your own creative practice.

"I'm big with music. I make so many playlists depending on what I'm going through in my life or my mood."
Where and when do you feel most in your element?

When there is sun shining in the early morning, in places where I see nature through the window, when I can take the time to feel and create, in discovering new places, new faces. I feel in my element when my curious mind can explore freely.

Is there a daily ritual that keeps you connected to your most authentic self?

Taking ten minutes to do nothing but be with myself and listen to music. Absolutely nothing but me and the music.

Is there a philosophy or mantra that you return to?

"Life's like a garden, there are no mistakes, only experiments." I come back to this when something doesn't go the way I planned. Not every seed grows the way you thought it would, and that's not failure, that's just the garden doing what gardens do. I try to stay curious instead of afraid.

Is there a book that has inspired your way of living?

The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak.

Is there there a musical genre, playlist or specific song that encourages you to enter a state of flow?

I'm big with music. It's always on, always in my ears, and I'm really not into one single genre. I make so many playlists depending on what I'm going through in my life or my mood, and it's really a big part of The Place's universe.

Who are your biggest style influences?

Monica Bellucci, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot — really, any amazing, fierce woman from the '90s.

"I love the freedom of curating my days the way I want. Some mornings I'm very productive, sometimes it's in the evening. I need freedom."
WHAT DOES YOUR IDEAL DAY LOOK LIKE?

A slow wake-up followed by movement. Reading my notes from last evening's journaling, music on, eyes on the horizon. Working a little in the morning, taking it slow during lunch, a nap, reading, working a bit more, being in the garden, enjoying a nice dinner and most of the time I feel a little spark of ideas in the evening and I love to follow that thread. No two days are alike. I love the freedom of curating my days the way I want. Some mornings I'm very productive, sometimes it's in the evening. I need freedom.

IF there was a person (dead or alive) that you could have dinner with, who would it be and why?

I would really, really love to have dinner with Rick Rubin!!! The creative wisdom of this man!

What is something that you own that holds the most sentimental value and why?

My Trinity ring from Cartier, engraved with my parents' names and my son's first painting.

What is a time, moment or place that makes you feel most nostalgic and why?

Sunsets, in some ways. It's the same feeling as when it's the end of summer and you know this softness in time will soon be over. There's a little quote somewhere in my notes that says "sunsets are proof that endings can be beautiful too." Each time I see the sun setting, I think about all the things that ended in my life and how that, too, is beautiful.
