IN THEIR ELEMENT

Welcome to In Their Element – A conscious exploration of creativity, practice and flow with people we admire from all walks of life.

For this volume, we visit Amanda Callan, founder of Herb Remedy and a naturopath, in her flagship apothecary in Byron Bay. Parlaying her strong passion for herbal manufacturing into a business was a natural progression. As a mother of four, Amanda has personally experienced how herbs can support her family’s health, and this inspired her to share the benefits of plants with others through simple, effective natural remedies.

Where and when do you feel most in your element?

Just in the everyday moments. The morning chaos of getting four boys out the door and off to school somehow feels like home.

Is there a daily ritual that keeps you connected to your most authentic self?

Tea is always close to me. I serve and drink tea at Cloud Hidden and whether it’s casually or in ceremony, it brings me back to stillness.

Is there a book that has inspired your way of living?

Old herbal texts, particularly the traditional herbal manufacturing ones. That knowledge has quietly shaped so much of how I've cared for my children and made herbal remedies for my family over the years.

Is there a musical genre, playlist or specific song that encourages you to enter a state of flow?

Classical and contemporary piano. Anything from Erik Satie to Nils Frahm. And I'm not opposed to some gangsta rap every now and then.

WHAT DOES YOUR IDEAL DAY LOOK LIKE?

Honestly, it's hard to pin down one perfect day. But it would start early, a surf would be a bonus. Time doing the work I love, and ending the day with my boys.

WHAT IS A TIME, MOMENT OR PLACE THAT MAKES YOU FEEL MOST NOSTALGIC AND WHY?

The old church I live in. So many years of raising my boys within those walls, from babies to now. When I stop and think about it, that place holds everything.

"I feel deeply myself when I'm at work, immersed in the world of herbal remedies, and when I'm out exercising, moving my body and clearing my head. Just being present, being useful, and feeling alive in whatever I'm doing."
Is there a philosophy or mantra that you return to?

Nothing strict or formal. It's more a feeling I come back to each day, quiet contentment. Feeling grounded in whatever is in front of me and not needing it to be more than it is.

What is something that you own that holds the most sentimental value and why?

A ring from my nanna Beryl. I'm not an overly sentimental person, but that's the one thing I'd be most sad to lose.

Who are your biggest style influences and why?

My 10 year old, Percy.
