IN THEIR ELEMENT

Welcome to In Their Element – A conscious exploration of creativity, practice and flow with people we admire from all walks of life.

For this volume, we visit ceramist and content creator Abby Bremner in her Mallorca studio. Splitting her time between the gold coastlines of California and the idyllic landscapes of Mallorca, Abby’s creative pursuits are deeply inspired by a slow, coastal existence – which is omnipresent in her dainty, dreamlike ceramics.

"If you never try, you never know. It's a seemingly simple mantra, but one I always find myself returning to when I'm afraid to try something. It's a reminder to just go for it."
Where and when do you feel most in your element?

I feel most in my element when I'm surrounded by nature and creating with clay. In such a digital world that we all have to be a part of, I find that when I can carve out time for myself to just be and create with my hands, I'm unplugged and my most present self. Here, I feel most in my element.

Is there a daily ritual that keeps you connected to your most authentic self?

For the past few months I've been incorporating morning pages (journaling 3 pages right away) into my daily ritual. There's something about brain dumping and getting my thoughts onto the page before the day begins that helps me feel more connected to my authentic voice, and cut through the noise.

Is there a philosophy or mantra that you return to?

If you never try, you never know. It's a seemingly simple mantra, but one I always find myself returning to when I'm afraid to try something. It's a reminder to just go for it. The worst that can happen is it doesn't work out, but you always gain the experience, which I consider priceless. Over time, that mindset builds a resilience toward rejection and things not going your way. You just keep trying.

Is there a book that has inspired your way of living?

I recently read The Life That's Waiting by Brianna Wiest. I appreciate the themes of shifting from a life driven by fear and control to one built by your own vision and authenticity, trusting that the right things will arrive without having to force them. It's a good reminder that the life you want is already waiting for you, we just have to get out of our own way and go for it. And the things that are meant for you will stay.

What is something that you own that holds the most sentimental value and why?

I have a shoebox under my bed filled with all the little notes, cards, and photos that people have given me over the years. If you've ever written me something, it's likely ended up there. I smile every time I open it. I immediately feel connected to that person and that moment in my life. I cherish those little gifts more than anything!

Is there a musical genre that encourages you to enter a state of flow?

When I'm creating, I gravitate toward peaceful music, or honestly just silence.I prefer listening to something that allows me to think and process my thoughts as I'm creating.

WHAT DOES YOUR IDEAL DAY LOOK LIKE?

My ideal day is slow and full. An unhurried morning, an afternoon of creativity and time spent swimming or in nature, and an evening surrounded by best friends or family making a big dinner together. Simple, nourishing, and fulfilling.

WHAT IS A TIME, MOMENT OR PLACE THAT MAKES YOU FEEL MOST NOSTALGIC AND WHY?

I'm someone who often feels nostalgic for moments I'm still living. I'm always noticing little glimmers in everyday life, aware that time is constantly fleeting. Having moved around a lot in my 20s, I've felt that deeply . Each chapter eventually passes. But I find that way of thinking makes me cherish each chapter I’m in even  more, knowing that things are constantly changing and will inevitably be a memory.
